Suicide and attempted suicide by insulin: A systematic review

Background: Intentional insulin overdose either in people with diabetes or without can be used to attempt suicide. Massive administration may result coma and unexplained hypoglycemia. In this study, we aim at reviewing the demographic data of suicidal cases, relation psychiatric illness dying by suicide attempting using insulin, route outcome, post-mortem findings collaborative evidence, initial presentation, blood glucose level complications cases. Methods: PubMed, Web Science, Scopus databases were searched on October 4, 2021, a comprehensive strategy review. The following search terms applied: (Insulin) AND (toxicity OR toxicology poisoning intoxication) (Suicide attempted Self-harm Self harm). was set based PRISMA guideline; 11 papers eligible for inclusion additional 23 studies added from citation search. All English articles related included no specific timeline filter used. Any non-English article accidental homicidal cases excluded review. Results: analysis 179 victims, aged between 13 76 years male predominance diabetes, especially T1DM, having higher prevalence, subcutaneous injection being most common administration. addition, illnesses multiple attempts identified many besides use combination other medications. Conclusions: Dying is uncommon, however, as mellitus prevalence increases worldwide, it expected that intentional will also increase. Furthermore, easy access are important factors should put into consideration.
